July 17, 2008 - State Sen. Tim Golden (D-Valdosta) is applauding the City of Valdosta for being named one of the 20 finalists for ESPN’s “TitleTown USA” honor, an ongoing contest featured on ESPN’s flagship show, “SportsCenter,” where sports fans throughout the nation submit nominations for what they consider to be “TitleTown USA.”
“I am extremely proud that my hometown of Valdosta is being recognized by one of the largest TV networks for its achievements in sports,” said Sen. Golden. “I encourage everyone to go online and vote to make Valdosta ‘TitleTown USA.’” Sen. Golden went on to thank Gov. Perdue for his support in issuing a proclamation encouraging the people of Georgia to help make Valdosta ‘TitleTown.’”
Out of more than 3,000 applications, Valdosta has been chosen as a finalist to compete against major cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston and Detroit. Valdosta was selected for the city’s unprecedented athletic achievements. In all, the city of Valdosta claims 439 championships of some type. The city, aptly nicknamed “Winnersville,” is most notably known for football giants Valdosta High School, Lowndes High School and Valdosta State University.
“SportsCenter” traveled to Valdosta this week to capture some of the city’s highlights, and was greeted by approximately 7,000 Valdosta fans and supporters; then on Wednesday featured Valdosta High School and several local sports legends.
