Golden named Georgia Chamber’s Legislator of the Year
June 11, 2007 -- Atlanta, GA -- State Sen. Tim Golden (D-Valdosta) was among the five recipients of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s first “Legislator of the Year” award, presented during the state chamber’s annual spring Governmental Affairs Council (GAC) Conference last week.

Senator Golden “deserves a lifetime achievement award for his long and consistent record of support for business at the State Capitol,” said Arthur “Skin” Edge, a former state Senator and member of the GAC, while making the presentation.

During the 2007 legislative session, Golden sponsored a Georgia Chamber initiative, SB 96, to clarify and improve Georgia's “Drug-free Workplace Laws.” The bill passed overwhelmingly in the Senate and House of Representatives and has been signed into law. Golden has been a longtime supporter of the Georgia Chamber, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, and other business organizations' efforts to repeal Georgia’s harmful and unique “energy tax” on manufacturers.

The Georgia Chamber’s Legislator of the Year award recognizes lawmakers who champion pro-business issues and who used his or her leadership in the General Assembly to pro-actively strengthen the state's business climate, economic development and create quality jobs for Georgians.  This award recognizes unwavering, distinguished leaders who demonstrated in a concrete way a willingness to stand up and fight for the free enterprise system and the business community on the tough issues.

Other inaugural recipients of the award are Sen. Don Balfour (R-Snellville), Sen. John Douglas (R-Social Circle), Rep. Jeff Lewis (R-Cartersville) and Rep. Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta).

“The members of the GAC felt it was important to recognize those members whose exceptional pro-business, pro-Georgia Chamber positions rose to a special level of distinction,” said Joe Fleming, Senior Vice President for Government Affairs.  “We are fortunate to have many, many pro-business, less-government-regulation, free-market members of the Georgia General Assembly.  There are many who deserve recognition, but the Georgia Chamber believes these five members stood out this year, this session, for their extraordinary support.”

Golden, serving his fifth term in the Senate, represents Georgia’s 8th District, including Brooks and Lowndes counties and parts of Cook and Thomas counties. He is secretary of the Senate Appropriations Committee and also serves on the Finance, Insurance & Labor, Higher Education, and Government Oversight committees. He is chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
