Sen. Golden appointed to study committees
June 4, 2007 -- Atlanta, GA -- State Sen. Tim Golden (D-Valdosta) has been appointed by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle to newly formed Senate study committees.

Sen. Golden will serve on committees to study Property and Casualty Rate Regulation; Communications Taxes, Fees, and Telecommunications Franchising Process; and Cigarette Tax Evasion.

During the remainder of this year, members of the study committees will speak with experts, hold public hearings, gather research, and provide the Senate public policy recommendations to be considered for the 2008 Georgia General Assembly.

“I appreciate the confidence that Lt. Gov. Cagle has shown in appointing me to serve on these study committees,” Golden said. “I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to investigate these public policy issues and work toward recommendations that result in sound public policy for our state.”

The Property and Casualty Rate Regulation committee will investigate the extent state government should regulate the insurance industry.  Proponents of less government regulation contend taxpayers and consumers would benefit from competitive market forces determining prices as opposed to the government.  Others contend government regulation is necessary to prevent discriminatory practices and equitable access to resources.

The Communications Taxes, Fees, and Telecommunications Franchising Process committee will look at simplifying the tax structure of communication services.  Proponents of changing the tax structure claim such action can aid economic development, attract new jobs, secure existing jobs, encourage investment, and provide other benefits.

The Cigarette Tax Evasion committee will examine the growing problem of untaxed cigarettes and the impact it is having on Georgia citizens.

Golden, serving his fifth term in the Senate, represents Georgia’s 8th District, including Brooks and Lowndes counties and parts of Cook and Thomas counties. He is secretary of the Senate Appropriations Committee and also serves on the Finance, Insurance & Labor, Higher Education, and Government Oversight committees. He is chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
