Georgians show support for Guard members, families

Valdosta, GA - June 6, 2006 - State Sen. Tim Golden (D-Valdosta) said Tuesday he is extremely pleased that at least $84,000 has already been donated to the Georgia National Guard assistance fund this year through a state income tax check-off.

“These initial figures are very encouraging, and have helped provide the Foundation with much needed funds to help our Guard members and their families,” Senator Golden said.  He continued, “I know that this year’s income tax revenues are still being counted, and many Georgians who got extensions have not yet even filed their returns. So I hope we top $100,000 in tax check-off funds in addition to private donations that can be made at anytime throughout the year as we strive toward our goal of $1 million for the Foundation.”

Last year, Golden sponsored legislation that established the tax check-off system and raised awareness of the Georgia National Guard Family Foundation fund to support the families of the troops serving in the war on terrorism.

The Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation Inc. is providing financial assistance to the members of the National Guard; which to date over 9,000 guardsmen have been deployed since September 11, 2001, the largest deployment of the Georgia National Guard since World War II.  The fund helps those serving overseas to help their families with such items as rent, car payments or utility bills while they are away. The legislation authorized a check-off donation on Georgians’ 2005 state income tax returns.

The check-off is perhaps the most convenient way to support these families. But it is not the only way. You can help organize a grassroots community effort to raise funds for the foundation, solicit corporate donations or make a personal (tax deductible) contribution at any time during the year.
